Many couples plan to conceive a child at some point of their relationship. For some, it’s easy, for others, not so much. Even couples who already have a child may find it difficult to conceive again after a year. This is called secondary infertility, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 11% of couples experience is. There are other causes of infertility in women, such as age, depression, stress, and smoking, to name a few. But for some couples, hope of starting a family can be found via medical interventions like hormone replacement therapy (hrt), in vitro fertilization, and other types of assisted reproductive technology.

Infertility can plague a woman for a number of reasons. Studies suggest that even smoking a mere five cigarettes a day can lower fertility rates not only in women, but in men as well. Depression and stress due to financial hardship can also lead to early menopause, making it near impossible to conceive. Age and the onset of menopause, or perimenopause, is another big reason why women are experiencing infertility. This coincides with the latest trend of women waiting until later in their lives to start a family. Some are waiting until their late 30s, 40s, and even their 50s before deciding to have a baby. When one considers the fact that the average age for menopause is 51, but can affect any woman in their 30s, 40s, 50s, or 60s, it should come as no surprise that more and more women are having trouble conceiving.

But as stated before, there is a bit of hope for those experiencing infertility. In some cases, medicine, surgery, intra-uterine insemination, or even assisted reproductive technology can help treat infertility. However, the medical community advises that, before women under the age of 35 seek out treatment for infertility, they try to get pregnant for at least a year. Many infertility treatments are geared towards older women. For example, women in their 50s would benefit more from hrt or hormone therapy, a safe treatment that can be used up to five years.

Whatever route a woman decides to take to treat her infertility is up to her. There are options available to help hopeful couples conceive and start the family they’ve always dreamed of.
